Where to go for advice...who's who?

Most of the time issues are resolved within a department, or through the specialty subcommittees that send representation to the Consultant subcommittee - but on occasion there is a need to go further. NHS Grampian has comprehensive policies pertaining to raising concern and dealing with doctors who are in need of support. When concerns are more generic in nature there is a bewildering range of committees...

BMA LNC

We are a negotiating body - our remit is the terms and conditions of service for medical and dental staff employed by NHS Grampian within the bounds set by national terms and conditions of the national contracts. We are always pleased to try and help with general advice in respect of the application of NHS Grampian's policies in respect of terms and conditions. We are keen to know of issues and we will engage NHS management when necessary.

We cannot speak comprehensively to personal situations - for example in respect of disciplinary procedures. We will do our best to give general advice and support but these issues are best supported by the BMA - and we do advise membership for this reason.

Academic Staff

Colleagues employed by the University can seek advice on NHS aspects of their work through the LNC. Terms and conditions of service and University aspects of employment should be directed to the askBMA service or by contacting the BMA Assistant Secretary locally. The local University Representative (Mike Crilly) to the Scottish Medical Academic Specialists Committee will also be able to advise and will take issues forward to SMASC.

Area Medical Committee

This is a standing committee of the Health Board, advising NHS Grampian on clinical matters. Where your concern cannot be addressed through local management channels and is principally in respect of a clinical issue - for example a clinical governance concern, you are advised to raise the issue with the Area Medical Committee or its subsidiary - the Consultant Subcommittee. Some issues overlap into terms and conditions of service and can legitimately be raised through the BMA LNC synchronously.

BMA

The BMA, and locally specifically the Assistant secretary, is the primary source for individual support in respect of terms and conditions of service.

Area Consultants Committee

This is the local branch of the Scottish Consultants Committee - it is the best route for raising issues of national concern in respect of terms and conditions of service. Dr Ruth Stephenson is the Chair.

Grampian BMA Division

This BMA committee affiliates all crafts (Consultants, GPs, SSAS doctors and Juniors) in the region. It is hoped to have more interdisciplinary meetings in the future under the auspices of the Division.

Grampian JDC

Junior Doctors concerns can be raised through the regional junior doctors committee. Please contact the LNC secretary if you want to get in touch.
